Upon first entry into “Effective Training at Work”, the new student “meets” Mary Katherine, their friendly narrator, instructor and helper. After a brief course overview, the student is sent to the Main Menu where they can select from numerous topics such as: The Natural Way, Know Before You Go, Training Tools & Techniques, Task Analysis, Prompting, Reinforcement, Motivation, Fading, Influence, Instruction & Feedback, Fine Tuning and Do’s & Don’ts.
Each topic is packed with mini-lectures from Mary Katherine, as well as advice and instruction from employers, job coaches and consumers, and video demonstrations of Linda at her first week on the job with her trainer Pat. Several sites include audio and video excerpts from landmark training films of Dr. Marc Gold, who, in the 1960’s and 70’s, created and taught many of the techniques still used today (courtesy of Michael Callahan).
Pop-quizzes constantly challenge the student with multiple choice questions, crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blank, mix & match and drag & drop exercises. Progress is tracked and reported from a data file that can either be stored on the computer’s hard drive or a floppy disk for portability. Upon completion of a chapter, the student can take a quiz up to three times (each one is different) and their scores are recorded.
A “fill-in-the-blank” workbook can be printed to guide the student in key learning points and to prepare for quiz questions. The Information Station also contains articles and resources from supported employment experts.
Each topic can be finished in less than 30 minutes, and students are encouraged to limit their training sessions to about 50 minutes each.
